The 10mm Auto round, often referred to as the “.40 super,” was created by United States Marine Lieutenant Colonel Jeff Cooper. Cooper, who died in 2006, was considered by many to be one of the best handgun handlers in the world. His thought in designing the 10mm was to provide a happy medium between the power of the .45 and the usability of the 9mm. He first created the 10mm in 1983 with the Bren Ten pistol. It was later implemented, though just for a few years, by the FBI following the famed 1986 FBI Miami shootout.
