Goex FFFFg Black Powder
Goex FFFFg (or 4Fg) is suited for Priming Powder for Flintlocks. While Goex has improved manufacturing processes and material quality, they have manufactured black powder using traditional materials to provide the same great ignition characteristics and uniform speed that master shooters and hunters have relied on for over 200 years. Goex Black Powder is available in different granular sizes to tailor a performance to a specific firearm. From FFFFg (smallest) to Cannon (largest), Goex has a granulation size for your firearm.
Just want you all to know that I called Double D. this morning and raised a concern about mentioning wet newspaper as one of the materials used for Filler-Wads. He told me to cover any concerns on this thread and I am. This does not in any way lessen the volume of good solid information on constructing Blank Loads in the text that he presented.
I heard a recording in the late 60s about a performance of the 1812 Overture by some orchestra and cannon technicians, NOT South Bend Replicas, in which some reports were absolutely earsplitting, while others were normal for approx. 2 IN. Bores which all their cannon had. The recording expressed concern about this and some possible causes were discussed. The high-pressure blasts were noted and it was postulated that perhaps the wet newspaper created an obstruction on some shots, but not on others.
The unpredictable nature of the performance of wet newspaper wads was definitely a concern to them and to me as well. In addition, I read in the Artilleryman Magazine over the years that wet newsprint was among the worst of all possible wad materials. There may have been a mention of some engineering theory as to WHY this is true having to do with the “plastic” nature of such a wad in the way it reacts to sudden pushing by powder gasses. This could have been in some other publication. At this date, I can’t say for sure.
Does anyone in our membership have any other information on “newspaper wads” and why they could elevate pressures unpredictably up to unacceptable levels, and, for that reason, not be used in cannons?
