Hodgdon LONGSHOT spherical powder is the most versatile shotshell heavy field propellant Hodgdon has ever produced. Great loads in 10 ga., 12 ga., 16 ga., 20 ga., and 28 ga. are shown in Hodgdon’s Reloading Data. This propellant provides true magnum velocities with superb patterns. In addition, LONGSHOT is the best choice for those competitors shooting games such as “Buddy”, “Annie Oakleys” and more. LONGSHOT is the high-velocity pistol choice in 38 Super, 40 S&W, and 357 SIG at lower than usual operating pressures.
Longshot powder is a great versatile powder. You can load shotshells and a variety of pistol/revolver calibers with it. I always have this stuff on hand, it meters great, through my Lee Auto-Drum measure. It also has a kinda fluffy structure to it, which makes double charges kind of hard. It’s nowhere like trail boss or tin star(N32c), but compared to some other ball powders, it’s a little more fluffy. I use this stuff in my 40, 9mm, 357sig, also my 45 colt marlin 94. Hodgdon has load data for a multitude of calibers with this powder. It gives good velocity, decent case fill, ignites well, and burns fairly clean. With my 45 colts, Hodgdon only has load data for Ruger and T/C pressure loads, but you can use this powder for standard pressure loads as well. But you really need to work out loads yourself on that. But Hornady has a standard pressure load in their manual for a 225 Gr FTX, with a maximum charge of 9.5gns. That gives me about 1250fps through my Marlin 94, I load up a little hotter in my 94 though. Longshot powder is in the same burn rate zone as Winchester 572, Alliant blue dot, accurate #7, to name a few. But you can almost always find this powder, it’s kind of an underrated powder in my opinion. That’s fine by me because I know when I need some more Longshot, it’ll be there. I’m set for a while though, I ordered an 8lb jug a bit back, that ought to load A LOT of handgun cartridges. So try a pound out for yourself and give it a shot, you’ll be surprised how versatile and well this powder actually is. Or better yet don’t try it, leave it alone so there’s more for me when I need a restock.
